The house notebook

Small observations.
No required reading.

A few thoughts from around the house. Best taken with a cup and absolutely no intention of remembering every word.

Note 01 / Percy

In defence of
an empty afternoon.

There is a particular kind of afternoon that begins with a plan to go out and ends with your book resting open on your chest. We think this counts as a day well spent.

A place to stay can make room for that possibility. A comfortable chair, a window with changing light, a cup that stays within reach. Small things, mostly, arranged so you do not have to keep rearranging yourself.

Go for the walk if you want to. The chair will not take it personally. But if you stay, there is no need to invent a useful reason.

Note 02 / Dot

A room needs
more than a bed.

Dot has waited in enough rooms to recognise a common problem: the only comfortable place to sit is also the place you are supposed to sleep. It gives the whole day rather limited options.

A window bench changes the arrangement. You can take your shoes off without going to bed. Open a book without taking over the desk. Sit beside someone without both pointing at a screen.

It is a small piece of furniture with an unusually broad job description. Dot approves, and she is famously difficult to impress.

Note 03 / Pip

The cup after
the last cup.

Sometimes the day refuses to finish neatly. A late arrival, a conversation that wanders, a book with an unreasonable final chapter. That is when a kitchen earns its keep.

Not a grand kitchen. A kettle, a shelf of cups, a little bread and a place to sit while the water comes up. Enough to make being awake feel less like an administrative error.

Pip is not interested in the reason. He puts the water on. You can decide what to do with the next ten minutes.

Visit the night kitchen →

A cream night-kitchen counter with green tiles, a brass rail, Pip the enamel kettle, two cups and a small plate of toast.
